Committee on the Assessment of the Department of Energy’s Methane Hydrate Research and Development Program:
Evaluating Methane Hydrate as a Future Energy Resource
Realizing the Energy Potential of Methane Hydrate for the United States
This report, requested by Congress in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (P.L. 109-58), reviews progress made and future needs for the U.S. Department of Energy's research and development program to potentially produce methane gas from methane hydrate, a naturally occurring solid substance. This type of production could ultimately augment conventional natural gas supplies.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on January 29, 2010 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
