Desalination: A National Perspective

Recent technological advances have made removing salt from seawater and groundwater a realistic option for increasing water supplies in some parts of the United States, and desalination will likely have a niche in meeting the nation's future water needs. This new report, from the National Research Council of The National Academies, states that a federally coordinated research effort is needed to understand and lessen desalination's environmental impacts and further lower its costs.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on April 24, 2008 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Acdemies Press.
