Assessing Accomplished Teaching:  Advanced-Level Certification Programs

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) establishes standards for exemplary teaching and offers certification to educators who can demonstrate that they meet them. This congressionally mandated report, requested in P.L. 108-199, evaluates whether NBPTS certification is an effective way to improve teacher quality and boost student achievement.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on June 11, 2008 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
