Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions

Requested by Congress in P.L. 114-328, National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017, this new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.

This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on December 6, 2018 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
