Dietary Reference Intakes for Sodium and Potassium

Requested by Congress in P.L. 114-113, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2016, and P.L. 115-31, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017, this new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reviews the evidence on the relationship between sodium and potassium intakes and indicators of adequacy, toxicity, and chronic disease. It updates the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) using an expanded DRI model that includes consideration of chronic disease endpoints, and outlines research gaps to address the uncertainties identified in the process of deriving the reference values and evaluating public health implications.

These briefings were for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on March 5, 2019 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
