Prof. Wieland Gevers Executive Director, Academy of Science of South Africa

Prof Gevers graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1960 with first class honours and a distinction in all four professional examinations. He received the University Gold Medal for the most distinguished graduate in medicine that year. He was awarded a Rhodes scholarship and completed his degree in biochemistry at Oxford University before joining the University of Cape Town's Department of Chemical Pathology in 1970.

From 1971 to 1977 he was Professor of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Stellenbosch, and Director of the MRC Research Unit for Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. He was appointed Professor of Medical Biochemistry at UCT in 1978 and was Director of the UCT/MRC Muscle Research Unit from 1979 to 1988. In 1988, he was appointed Director of the UCT/MRC Unit for the Cell Biology of Atherosclerosis. He is now serving as the executive director for the Academy of Science of South Africa.
