1930s Need for a U.S. interstate highway system recognized.
1938 Federal-Aid Highway Act calls for superhighway feasibility study.
1940 Pennsylvania Turnpike opens
1941 National Interregional Highway Committee appointed by President Roosevelt
1944 Federal-Aid Highway Act called for designation of a national system of interstate highways, as well as strict, centrally controlled design criteria
1952 Federal-Aid Highway Act authorizes the first funding specifically for system construction
1956 Construction of the interstate highway system is launched
1956 Highway Revenue Act creats the Highway Trust Fund as a dedicated source for the interstate system.
