On World AIDS Day, Progress and Peril
December 1, 2010 -- As nations around the globe acknowledge World AIDS Day, there is some good news in the fight against the disease but the long-term outlook is sobering, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. A U.N. update on the epidemic finds that worldwide the number of new HIV infections is dropping, but a recent Institute of Medicine report projects that the number of new infections in sub-Saharan Africa will far outstrip available treatment resources by the end of this decade.
