Support Our Work
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s distinctive research process provides objective and straightforward answers to difficult questions of national importance. Your support of the National Academies’ Health and Medicine Division (HMD) allows us to provide timely and critical responses to matters that affect the health of the nation and all of society.
Past studies and activities of HMD, which until March 2016 were carried out by the Institute of Medicine, have raised awareness about medical errors in the U.S. health care system, charted a path for the future of nursing, explored U.S. preparedness for public health emergencies, and emphasized the importance of end-of-life care.
Although many of the studies we undertake begin as requests from federal agencies or foundations or as mandates from Congress, the task-specific nature of our funding severely limits HMD's potential and flexibility. Financial support from generous individuals, foundations, leading corporations, federal agencies, and other organizations who share our commitment to excellence and independence are essential to our quest to ask and answer the nation’s most pressing questions concerning health and health care.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Gifts and grants are tax-deductible. Learn more about our work on our About HMD page.
