Integrating Infectious Disease Considerations with Response to the Opioid Epidemic - A Workshop

Type: Stand Alone Workshop
Topics: Children and Families, Public Health, Substance Use and Mental Health
Board: Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice

Activity Description

The opioid epidemic is changing the epidemiology of HIV, hepatitis, and other infectious disease.

  • There is evidence of increases in these diseases and some communities have been affected disproportionately (rural communities).
  • Intravenous drug use (use and reuse of syringes) and sexual transmission are important sources of infection contributing to the spread of these diseases
  • Opioid addiction is on the increase in women; this has implications for perinatal transmission of HIV and hepatitis.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to understand the epidemiology of HIV, hepatitis, and infectious diseases and how the epidemiology of these diseases is interrelated.
