Type: Consensus Study
Topics: Diseases, Public Health, Quality and Patient Safety, Children, Youth and Families, Biomedical and Health Research
Board: Board on Population Health and Public Health Practice

Activity Description

The committee will review the epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidence regarding adverse health events associated with specific vaccines covered by the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. The vaccines to be reviewed are varicella zoster vaccine, influenza vaccines, hepatitis B vaccine, human papillomavirus vaccine, measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, hepatitis A vaccine, meningococcal vaccines, and tetanus-containing vaccines such as diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and-acellular pertussis vaccines. The committee will author a consensus report with conclusions on the evidence bearing on causality and the evidence regarding the biological mechanisms that underlie specific theories for how a specific vaccine is related to a specific adverse event. The project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The approximate start date for the project is 25 September 2008. A report will be issued at the end of the project in September 2011.

Request for Input on Bibliography

The Committee to Review Adverse Effects of Vaccines has posted a bibliography of citations it has reviewed.  As a reminder, the committee is assessing epidemiological, clinical, and biological literature in order to make conclusions about the causal relationship between specific vaccines and specific adverse events. The bibliography can be found here.
