Burn Pit Registry Workshop
In response to a congressional mandate contained in Public Law 112-260, Section 201, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is convening a committee to provide recommendations on collecting, maintaining, and monitoring information collected by the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA's) Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry. The committee will assess the effectiveness of the VA's information gathering efforts and provide recommendations for addressing the future medical needs of the affected groups. As part of this, the committee will comprise an analysis of the information collected by the registry in its initial months of operation. It will also offer recommendations on how to best ascertain and monitor the health effects of the exposures experienced by Service Members. As part of the process, the committee conducted this workshop to receive suggestions and input from veterans about their experiences so that their recommendations can be informed by insights from these individuals.
