The Eldercare Workforce Alliance, a coalition of 25 leading organizations representing older adults and the eldercare workforce, held its founding meeting during the first week of February 2009. The Alliance was formed in direct response to a report released in the spring of 2008 by the Institute of Medicine, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce, which concluded that America's eldercare workforce is dangerously understaffed and unprepared to care for the rapidly growing number of older adults in the U.S.
Senators Herb Kohl (D-WI), Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), and Bob Casey (D-PA), along with lead sponsor Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), introduced the first bill named for an IOM report on January 14, 2009. The “Retooling the Health Care Workforce for an Aging America Act” (H.R. 468) incorporates recommendations from the IOM report Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce.
