IOM Launches New Forum on Global Violence Prevention; Holds First Workshop January 27-28
Released: 1/19/2011
Violence claimed more than 1.5 million lives worldwide in 2000, according to the World Health Organization, and more than 90 percent of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Given the profound negative impacts of violence on the health and well-being of people and communities, particularly in less industrialized countries, the IOM has established a new Forum on Global Violence Prevention to promote research on this issue and encourage more effective prevention. The forum will begin its work with a workshop January 27 and 28, which will focus on violence against women and children.
