IOM Elects 65 New Members, Five Foreign Associates

The IOM announced the names of 65 new members and five foreign associates on October 17 in conjunction with its 41st annual meeting. Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

IOM Launches New Forum on Global Violence Prevention; Holds First Workshop January 27-28
Released: 1/19/2011

Violence claimed more than 1.5 million lives worldwide in 2000, according to the World Health Organization, and more than 90 percent of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Given the profound negative impacts of violence on the health and well-being of people and communities, particularly in less industrialized countries, the IOM has established a new Forum on Global Violence Prevention to promote research on this issue and encourage more effective prevention. The forum will begin its work with a workshop January 27 and 28, which will focus on violence against women and children.

Eric J. Nestler and Charles P. O'Brien, Addiction Researchers, Receive IOM's 2010 Sarnat Prize

The IOM awarded the 2010 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health to two scientists — Eric J. Nestler, the Nash Family Professor of Neuroscience, chair of the department of neuroscience, and director of the Friedman Brain Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and Charles P. O'Brien, the Kenneth Appel Professor of Psychiatry and vice chair of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine — for their complementary achievements in addiction science.

Sociologist David Mechanic receives Institute of Medicine's 2009 Sarnat Prize in Mental Health
Released: 10/12/2009

The Institute of Medicine awarded the 2009 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health to David Mechanic, University Professor and René Dubos Professor of Behavioral Sciences; and director, Institute for Health, Health Care Policy, and Aging Research, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. The Sarnat Prize, consisting of a medal and $20,000, was presented to Mechanic at IOM's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
