    This new report from the National Acad¬emies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine finds ample evidence that changes in brain structure and connectivity that happen in adolescence present young people with unique opportunities for positive, life-shaping development, and for recovery from past adversity.
  • Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities Released: May 09, 2019
    With support from SSA, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened an expert committee to look at ways to collect information about a person’s physical and mental functional abilities relevant to work requirements. The resulting report, Functional Assessment for Adults with Disabilities, lays out the committee’s findings and conclusions.
  • Exploring Lessons Learned from a Century of Outbreaks: Readiness for 2030: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: May 08, 2019
    Recognizing the 100th anniversary, in November 2018, the Forum on Microbial Threats of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held two sister workshops to examine the lessons from influenza pandemics and other major outbreaks; understand the extent to which the lessons have been learned; and discuss how they could be applied further to ensure that countries are sufficiently ready for future pandemics.
  • Pain Management for People with Serious Illness in the Context of the Opioid Use Disorder Epidemic: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: May 01, 2019
    On November 7–8, 2018, the Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness hosted a public workshop that brought together experts and key stakeholders from patient advocacy groups, academia, government, health plans and insurers to discuss the issue of pain management for those with serious illness in the context of the opioid use disorder epidemic.
  • Sustainable Diets, Food, and Nutrition: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: April 18, 2019
    On August 1-2, 2018, the Food Forum of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a 1.5-day public workshop that reviewed the current and emerging knowledge on the concept of sustainable diets within the field of food and nutrition.
  • The Role of Nonpharmacological Approaches to Pain Management: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: April 12, 2019
    On December 4–5, 2018 the Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous System Disorders and Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education hosted a public workshop that brought together experts and key stakeholders from government, academia, industry, health professional societies, and disease-focused organizations to discuss nonpharmacological treatments and integrative health models for pain management, and their role within the broad landscape of approaches to chronic pain management.
  • Strengthening the Connection between Health Professions Education and Practice: Proceedings of a Joint Workshop Released: April 11, 2019
    The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education with affiliates of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education held a workshop on November 13 and 14, 2018, in Washington, DC, titled Strengthening the Connection between Health Professions Education and Practice.
  • Evaluation of the Disability Determination Process for Traumatic Brain Injury in Veterans Released: April 10, 2019
    At the mandate of the U.S. Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) contracted with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to review the process by which the VA assesses impairments relating to TBI for purposes of awarding disability compensation.
  • The Intersection of Behavioral Health, Mental Health, and Health Literacy: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: April 04, 2019
    On July 18, 2018, a workshop titled The Intersection of Behavioral Health, Mental Health, and Health Literacy, was held in Washington, DC, was to explore issues associated with effective communication with individuals with mental or behavioral health issues and to identify ways in which health literacy approaches can facilitate communication.
  • Exploring Medical and Public Health Preparedness for a Nuclear Incident: Proceedings of a Workshop Released: March 26, 2019
    The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Disasters and Emergencies hosted a two-day public workshop on August 22-23, 2018 called Exploring Medical and Public Health Preparedness for a Nuclear Incident.
