  Food allergy—an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs, reproducibly, on exposure to a given food—can affect people’s lives in a number of ways, impacting routine life activities and sometimes diminishing social interactions and potentially causing severe health effects. Although much is known about this complex disease, many fundamental questions remain, and recommendations by public health authorities may be limited by scarce or inconsistent research findings.

  As the demographics of the United States shift toward a population that is made up of an increasing percentage of older adults and people with disabilities, the workforce that supports and enables these individuals is also shifting to meet the demands of this population. To better understand how the nation’s workforce can be strengthened to meet these demands, the Health and Medicine Division and the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, convened a public workshop with support from multiple sponsors.

  Califf was the keynote speaker at a workshop on multimodality therapies for brain disorders, convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Forum on Neuroscience and Nervous Systems Disorders. The workshop brought together key stakeholders to examine the general principles underlying multimodal therapies and to explore challenges, potential barriers, and opportunities for their development from multiple perspectives, including scientific, clinical, regulatory, and financial. These proceedings chronicle the presentations and discussions at the workshop.

  Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States; each year, more people die from lung cancer than from colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. There has been a push to develop and implement screening strategies for the early detection of lung cancer. The National Lung Screening Trial evaluated the effectiveness of annual screening with low-dose computed tomography to reduce lung cancer mortality among individuals at high risk.

  For almost 25 years, the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) has been funding medical research for health conditions that affect military service members and veterans, their families, and the general public. Congress, in response to advocacy groups and other interested parties, determines which programs will be funded and at what level each year.

  The Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) aims to develop new approaches for detecting, measuring, and analyzing a wide range of biomedical information including molecular, genomic, cellular, clinical, behavioral, physiological, and environmental parameters, is intended to enable a new era of medicine in which researchers, providers, and patients work together to develop individualized care. An important challenge to assembling the research cohort needed for this initiative is reaching individuals who are socioeconomically disadvantaged.

  The Committee on Pain Management and Regulatory Strategies to Address Prescription Opioid Abuse was tasked with preparing a report that will identify actions that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and others can take to address the opioid epidemic while taking into account individual need for pain control, including FDA’s development of a formal method to incorporate the broader public health impact of prescription opioids into its future approval decisions regarding opioids.

  On June 16, 2016, the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement held a 1-day public workshop at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Brooklyn, New York. At this workshop, participants explored public health approaches to reducing and preventing community violence. Individual participants discussed the effects of trauma and violence on communities and explored approaches that community members and multisector partners are using to build safe, resilient, and healthy communities.

  With the worst human refugee crisis since World War II as the backdrop, from March 16 through March 18, 2016, the Forum on Investing in Young Children Globally, in partnership with UNICEF and the King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, held a workshop in Amman, Jordan, to explore topics related to investing in young children for peaceful societies.
