Organizational Commitment Statements

Statements of Commitment in Response to Dying in America: Improving Quality and Honoring Individual Preferences Near the End of Life

To provide opportunities for organizations to discuss and share plans of action related to recommendations in the Dying in America report, the IOM is collecting statements describing organizational goals or commitments to action in one or more of the recommendation areas. The IOM welcomes further statements describing goals or commitments to improving end-of-life care. Submit statements by e-mail, as Word or PDF documents, to Laura DeStefano, IOM communications officer, at ldestefano@nas.edu. Complete submission guidelines appear below.

Submission guidelines:

Statements should, to the extent possible, respond to the recommendations of the IOM report by describing current or planned actions in the following areas: 1) person-centered, family-oriented care; 2) clinician-patient communication and advance care planning; 3) professional education and development; 4) policies and payment systems; or 5) public education and engagement.
  • Statements should be 500 words or less. If applicable, you may include a link to a longer statement on your website.
  • Statements should describe organizational (rather than personal) commitments.
  • Statements responding to the prompt may be posted on the IOM website.
  • Statements will not be edited without written approval from the submitting organization.
  • The IOM may choose not to post submissions that are not responsive to the prompt.
