Tire Choices Affect Vehicle Fuel Consumption

April 4 -- By reducing tires' "rolling resistance" by 10 percent, vehicles could reduce fuel consumption by up to 2 percent and save the nation 1 billion to 2 billion gallons of gasoline annually, says a new Transportation Research Board report. Congress should request that information on the energy performance of passenger vehicle tires be made publicly available, the report says.
