DOE Cleanup Plan at Three Sites Faces Continued Challenges

April 4 -- While the U.S. Department of Energy's overall plan for cleaning up radioactive waste in underground tanks at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, the Hanford Site in Washington state, and the Idaho National Laboratory is workable, some important challenges remain, says a new National Research Council report. It recommends a more risk-informed decision-making process and a R&D program to improve waste retrieval, processing and disposal.
