NAS Member Wins Nobel Prize in Economics

October 9 -- National Academy of Sciences member Edmund S. Phelps won the 2006 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Phelps was recognized for his analysis of the relationship between inflation and unemployment, and his work's impact on economic research and policy. He introduced the idea that expectations of inflation impact unemployment and price and wage increases.
