Better Land Elevation Data Needed to Support FEMA Flood Maps

February 1 -- A new National Research Council report says that aerial laser technology should be used to map the nation's land elevation, providing more accurate digital data for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's floodplain maps, which are used to determine whether property owners need flood insurance. The technology provides highly accurate elevation data to generate 3-D maps of bare-earth surfaces critical for predicting the velocity and depth of flood flows.
