In Memoriam: Daniel E. Koshland Jr. (1920-2007)

July 25 -- Daniel E. Koshland Jr., founder of the Marian Koshland Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences and professor of biochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley, died July 23 after a stroke. An NAS member since 1966, Koshland advanced the understanding of enzymes and protein chemistry, discovered essential features of cell signaling, and studied chemical changes in the brain linked to Alzheimer’s disease. He served two terms on the NAS Council, was chair of the editorial board of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and edited the journal Science from 1985 to 1995.
