October 29 -- A new National Research Council report recommends that the U.S. Department of Energy scale back the research and development aspects of its Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) program, which aims to reprocess spent nuclear fuel that could be shared with partner countries. GNEP is part of DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy, which should instead focus on the startup of new commercial nuclear power plants, the report says.
