March 31, 2010 -- A new congressionally mandated report from the National Research Council evaluates technologies to reduce the fuel consumption of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, which account for about 26 percent of U.S. transportation fuel use. Agencies should measure these vehicles’ fuel economy in a way that takes into consideration the weight they carry, rather than the miles-per-gallon standard used for passenger cars. The report says Congress should consider imposing a fuel tax as an alternative to fuel-economy standards.
