January 26, 2011 -- In his annual address to Congress, President Obama called for steps to encourage innovation in America, including investments in basic research and clean energy technologies and improvements to math and science education. “We know what it takes to compete for the jobs and industries of our time,” he said. “We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world.” His remarks echoed concerns and solutions raised in the 2005 report Rising Above the Gathering Storm by the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine, and reiterated last fall in an update of that report.
