October 22 -- A new report from the InterAcademy Council -- made up of over 100 science, engineering, and medical academies -- recommends that governments worldwide impose prices to discourage carbon emissions and provide research and financial incentives to develop renewable energy sources. "This report -- written by a group of scientists from many nations led by NAS member Steve Chu and José Goldemburg from Brazil -- collects and analyzes current information on energy demand and supplies along with estimates of future demand," said Ralph J. Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences, a member of the IAC. "It also recommends how to move toward a more sustainable energy future. The report will be a major contribution to the policy discussion."
