January 8 -- The National Crime Victimization Survey provides crucial data on crime, particularly crimes unreported to police. The Bureau of Justice Statistics should be given a budget adequate to field a high-quality survey, says a new National Research Council report, which describes several options for the survey's future design. If budget constraints continue, the bureau should consider reducing interview frequency before choosing to cut the survey’s sample size, the report says.
