IOM Presents Awards for Outstanding Achievements and Service

October 12 -- At its 39th annual meeting, the Institute of Medicine presented Thomas E. Starzl with the 2009 Gustav O. Lienhard Award for the advancement for personal health care services in the United States in recognition of his foundational role in pioneering and advancing organ transplantation science.. Also, David Mechanic received the 2009 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health in recognition of his efforts to increase scientific knowledge about the causes and factors shaping mental health and to improve mental health care services. In addition, IOM honored three of its members for outstanding service to the organization.
