INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL) LENDING POLICIES


The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine Research Center will lend materials to other libraries located within the United States and Canada. Requests may be sent using OCLC ILLiad (interlibrary loan software) or ALA (American Library Association) forms. Email forms to: researchILL@nas.edu or Fax: (202) 334-1651.

What materials can be loaned?
  • Articles from our electronic journals collection in compliance with publisher license agreements and Section 108 of the United States Copyright Law (“Limitations on exclusive rights, Reproduction by libraries and archives”).
What materials cannot be loaned?
  • The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine reports for which the Research Center only owns one archival copy.
  • Current issues of journals or magazines.
What fees are charged for loans?
  • There are not any fees for borrowing our material. If an item is lost or damaged, we charge a replacement fee.
Lost, Unreturned, or Damaged Items
  • The Research Center charges a fee of $35.00 for The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine reports loaned to other libraries that are lost, damaged, or unreturned. For other materials borrowed from our collection that are lost, damaged, or unreturned the publisher cost for the material to be replaced would apply.
Photocopies
  • We will email or fax photocopies from our print journals collection. Limit is 5 photocopies per request.
How long are items loaned?
  • The lending period is 3 weeks, and the renewal period is 2 weeks. More than one renewal is allowed only on a case-by-case basis.
What fees are charged for loans?
  • There are not any fees for borrowing our material. If an item is lost or damaged, we charge a replacement fee. There are no additional processing fees.
