Behavioral & Social Sciences at the National Academies
Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education ~ provides the primary focus for the behavioral and social sciences and education in all National Research Council endeavors. DBASSE strives to apply the knowledge, analytical tools, and methods of the behavioral and social sciences to some of the nation’s most pressing issues in efforts to understand them and to contribute to their solution. The division’s areas of expertise include anthropology, child development, demography, economics, education, history, law, gerontology, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology and statistics.

Committee on National Statistics ~ contributes to a better understanding of important national issues by working to improve the statistical methods and information on which public policy decisions are based.
Center for Economic, Governance, and International Studies ~ addresses the nation’s most pressing problems, using the knowledge, analytical tools and methods of the behavioral and social sciences. Its four standing committees –- the Committee on the Human Dimensions of Global Change; Committee on Law and Justice; and Committee on Population and the Committee on Monitoring International Labor Standards –- engage the country’s leading social and behavioral scientists.
Center for Studies of Behavior and Development ~ addresses the nation’s most pressing problems, using the knowledge, analytical tools and methods of the behavioral and social sciences. Its three standing committees - the Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences, the Board on Children, Youth, and Families, and the Committee on Human Factors - engage the country’s leading social and behavioral scientists in the areas of aging, cognition, ethical issues in drug abuse research, disability determination for sensory and cognitive processes, and work and performance.
Committee on Human Factors ~ provides new perspectives on theoretical and methodological issues concerning the relationship of individuals and organizations to technology and the environment and identifies critical issues in the design, test, evaluation and use of new human-centered technologies.
Committee on Monitoring International Labor Standards ~ seeks to develop a sustainable system for monitoring compliance with core international labor standards.
Board on Children, Youth and Families ~ addresses a variety of policy-relevant issues related to the well-being of children, youth and families.
Committee on Adolescent Health and Development ~ is responsible for providing an interdisciplinary, national focal point for taking stock of what we know about adolescent health and development, applying this knowledge base to pressing issues facing adolescents and stimulating new directions for innovation and inquiry.
Committee on Law and Justice ~ reviews, synthesizes and proposes research related to law enforcement and the administration of justice. Also provides an intellectual resource for federal agencies and private groups.
Committee on Population ~ conducts studies on population projections, refugees, urban population dynamics, aging, bioindicators and demography.
Committee on Human Dimensions of Global Change ~ serves as a source of broad scientific expertise and judgment for setting agendas for research on human-environment interactions.
