TRB Webinar: When to Use Fully Grouted Piezometer Installations

July 8, 2020

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (EDT)

Past

The fully grouted method of installing piezometers is increasingly popular, but it doesn’t work in every case. TRB hosted a webinar on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern to provide critical information regarding the most effective piezometer installations for the applications at hand. It focused on which factors to consider when deciding on a fully grouted installation rather than a conventional sand pack type. Presenters discussed the consequences of selecting the inappropriate methods. They included case studies to demonstrate some of the difficulties analyzing data and to highlight reasons for what might appear to be erroneous data.

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Geotechnical Instrumentation and Modeling.

The slides and a recording are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Introduction, implementation and application, field examples, and research: Joel Swenson, Barr Engineering
  2. USACE research, installation methods, and case studies: Georgette Hlepas, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
  3. Coverage in ISO 1674-4 Piezometers: Filters, and measuring negative pore water pressures, Andrew Ridley, Geotechnical Observations Ltd.
  4. Question and answer session: Moderated by Scott Anderson, BGC Engineering and Tony Simmonds, Geokon

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the most effective way to properly install piezometers
  2. Understand the consequences of inappropriate selection and installation
  3. Analyze collected data

Professional Development Hour Information

Professional engineers (PEs) who register and attended the entire webinar as an individual will be awarded 1.5 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). TRB’s webinar program awards PDH credits only to the registered individual, and not to other members of a group that view the webinar together. To be eligible for the credits, individuals must remain signed in for the entire webinar, including for any question and answer session following the presentations.
