TRB Webinar: Paving the Way - Smart and Multifunctional Pavements

November 19, 2020

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM (EST)

Past

Pavements occupy valuable real estate, and there is a need to move beyond simply designing pavements for their traditional purpose of carrying traffic loads. Smart pavements allow for real-time sensing applications, and multifunctional pavements can serve multiple roles within larger infrastructure systems, including energy harvesting and stormwater management. TRB hosted webinar on Thursday, November 19, 2020 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that illustrated how to design pavements to be smart and multifunctional. Presenters described the opportunities for reducing the cost of maintaining and restoring these functionalities through application of the rapidly increasing capabilities and decreasing costs of sensors, data acquisition and storage, and decision-support using sensor data. They also discussed how to create and maintain “communicative pavements.”

This webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committee on Pavement Structural Testing and Evaluation.

The slides and a recording of the webinar are available.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Emerging smart technologies and potential opportunities: Nizar Lajnef, Michigan State University
  2. A roadmap for permeable pavements: John Harvey, University of California, Davis
  3. Multifunctional aspects: Davide Lo Presti, University of Palermo (Italy) and University of Nottingham (UK)
    1. Energy harvesting
    2. Stormwater management
  4. Question and answer session: Moderated by James Bryce, Marshall University

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify current smart technologies and how they are being deployed
  2. Identify uses of multifunctional pavements
  3. Describe the challenges and advantages of smart and multifunctional pavements
