The National Academies will develop an issue paper on how generative AI in software engineering could affect critical, software-enabled warfighting capabilities. Informed by expert discussions, it will examine how AI is used across industry and government, how it is reshaping software development, the software development workforce, and how defense practices can adapt. The effort will also assess emerging cybersecurity risks and identify ways to capture AI’s benefits while mitigating potential threats.
