Back in School: Addressing the Well-Being of Students in the Wake of COVID-19: A Virtual Workshop

The workshop will focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the intersection of students’ learning and mental health. It will also explore the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on specific populations, including children of color, children with special health care needs and learning difficulties, and children living in poverty. The workshop will feature lived experience perspectives and expert presentations, as well as discussions on the intersection of learning loss, mental health, and social emotional learning.

Description

A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize and convene a virtual, public workshop over three afternoons. The workshop will focus on the effects of COVID-19 on the intersection of students’ learning and mental health. It will also explore the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on specific populations, including children of color, children with special health care needs and learning difficulties, and children living in poverty. The workshop will feature lived experience perspectives and expert presentations, as well as discussions on the intersection of learning loss, mental health, and social emotional learning. The planning committee will develop the agenda, identify meeting objectives, and select appropriate speakers. A proceedings-in-brief will be prepared by a staff member in accordance with institutional guidelines.
