Because of continuing uncertainty about the long-term health effects of the sprayed herbicides on Vietnam veterans, Congress passed the Agent Orange Act of 1991. The legislation directed the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to request the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to perform a comprehensive evaluation of scientific and medical information regarding the health effects of exposure to Agent Orange and other herbicides used in Vietnam. Mandated updates to the original study were to be conducted every 2 years for 10 years. Veterans and Agent Orange, Update 2006 is the seventh report in this series.

The workshop focused on the environmental and health impacts related to the design, construction, and operation of healthcare facilities, which are part of one of the largest service industries in the United States. This is an opportunity of great promise, but more information about the complexities involved in building a green facility is needed.

Seafood is a widely available, nutrient-rich food that provides high quality protein, low in saturated fat and rich in polyunsaturated fats, and particularly the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosapentaenoic acid (DHA). The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) asked the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies to review evidence on the benefits and risks associated with seafood consumption to help consumers make informed choices and to make recommendations on ways to guide U.S. consumers in making appropriate selections. Foodborne agents have been estimated to cause approximately 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,200 deaths in the United States each year. In order to examine issues critical to the protection of the nation’s food supply, the Institute of Medicine’s Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop on October 25 and 26, 2005, in Washington, D.C. to explore existing knowledge and unanswered questions on the nature and extent of foodborne threats to health.

The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity report, Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity: How Do We Measure Up?, examines the progress made by obesity prevention initiatives in the United States over the past two years. The report builds on the IOM's 2005 report, Preventing Childhood Obesity: Health in the Balance, which was a congressionally mandated study that provided a blueprint to guide concerted actions for many stakeholders--including government, industry, media, communities, schools, and families--to collectively respond to the growing obesity epidemic in children and youth.
