Artist-in-Residence

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine are pleased to announce the creation of an Artist-in-Residence program where art and science naturally come together to inspire and engage our global community. Come meet our current artist!

CPNAS: Cultural Programs of the National Academy of Sciences

Our exhibitions and public events explore relationships among the arts and science, engineering, and medicine. Offerings include guided tours of the NAS Building, staged theatrical readings, film screenings, and the DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous, a series of discussion salons. Advance registration and a government-issued photo ID (such as a drivers’ license or passport) are required to see the exhibitions, tour the building, and attend special events.

Creative Responses to the Coronavirus

Creativity often flourishes in stressful times. Explore an online archive of more than 125 creative responses to the coronavirus pandemic, and add your own project or ones that have inspired you. The project was launched by Cultural Programs of the NAS and Issues in Science and Technology magazine.

Distinctive Voices

Distinctive discoveries, innovations, and advances deserve distinctive voices to explain them. Distinctive Voices @ The Beckman Center highlights emerging issues in an exciting and engaging public forum. These lectures provide a unique opportunity to stay at the cutting edge of science, engineering, and medicine and learn from experts in presentations geared to the general public.

Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications

This awards program aims to recognize and develop excellence in science communication by research scientists, independent and organizational science communicators, and by early career, local, and freelance science journalists. The program will provide winners with cash awards as well as training and resources to further expand their communications skills.

EngineerGirl

There are exciting career opportunities for girls in engineering, and EngineerGirl is designed to help girls learn about them. EngineerGirl engages girls from 3rd to 12th grade with information, contests, stories, and advice from over 400 women engineers. The EngineerGirl ambassadors program also supports high school girls making a difference for younger girls in their communities.

LabX

LabX is a public engagement testbed that boldly experiments with a variety of creative – sometimes even unorthodox – approaches designed to reach diverse audiences. They routinely tinker with new ideas and programs but have demonstrated a special fondness for STEM-based games of all kinds, short videos featuring fun people doing cool science things, and Instagram posts showcasing surprising science stories.

The Science & Entertainment Exchange

Yes, that’s an actual number! From a quick fact check to a special briefing, The Exchange works closely with the Hollywood community to foster a collaborative community of scientists, engineers, and entertainment industry professionals to deliver sometimes subtle but powerful messages about science that are grounded in authenticity, feature a richer, more diverse depiction of STEM characters, and that inspire film and TV projects driven by science and engineering themes.

Young Leaders Visualize Health Equity

The National Academy of Medicine called on young leaders, ages 5-26, to use art to explore how the social determinants of health - factors in the environment where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age - play a role in shaping their lives and their communities, and what it might look and feel like to one day live in a world where everyone has an equal opportunity to be healthy, safe, and happy.
