Computer models and simulations are increasingly used to inform decision making for high-consequence, mission-critical, and safety applications - from healthcare to defense. Accounting for uncertainties in model-based inference, prediction, and optimization is essential, particularly for complex societal and technological systems such as digital twins.

Join the National Academies on June 17, 2024 from 1-5pm ET for a symposium to explore advances and evolutions in verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) for increasingly complex and dynamic modeling and simulation.

Symposium discussions will explore:

How uncertainty propagates through model hierarchies and ensembles of models
Verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification for machine learning and artificial intelligence
How to measure and evaluate the reliability of complex modeling and simulation
Settings for which existing VVUQ methods are insufficient, such as digital twins
The role VVUQ plays in establishing trust

During this symposium, speakers will engage in a forward-looking discussion about the state of the statistical sciences and emerging opportunities for the discipline and its stakeholders. These panelists will explore the vitality of research in the field of statistics and consider the future of the discipline. The conversation will also illustrate the importance of statistics in key research domains, such as public health and medicine, as well as the impact of research and training in the statistical sciences on science and engineering.

Drs. Joel Greenhouse, Marina Vannucci, Helen Hao Zhang, and Tyler McCormick will discuss:

• the development and use of Bayesian statistical models for complex problems, including applications in genomics, neuroimaging, and engineering

• methodologies for combining information from multiple data sources, especially when linking data from observational studies and clinical trials

• quantifying and communicating uncertainty in complicated predictive models, such as in health policy

• inference within large-scale data mining and machine learning for predictive data analytics

After a series of presentations, the four speakers will come together for a moderated session in which they delve deeper into developments in machine learning and the statistical questions that motivate its growth, fostering interactions with domains that are enriched by the statistical sciences, and areas of exploration for the field.

Join us to explore the latest developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning across cognitive science, healthcare, and policy.

About this event

Advances in artificial intelligence could improve how we make decisions for a broad array of applications, such as healthcare or urban planning. However, practitioners need to understand and trust how complex machine learning systems make choices before these new tools can be more widely adopted.

Please join the National Academies for a symposium on Interpretable and Explainable AI and Machine Learning on Tuesday, June 21 from 1-4pm ET. During the symposium, expert speakers will discuss the possibilities and challenges of interpretable machine learning across a variety of applications, including cognitive science, healthcare, and policy. The symposium will conclude with a moderated panel on the future landscape of interpretable and ethical machine learning.

Featured Talks:

Dr. Been Kim (Google Brain) will explore how to bridge the gap between humans and machines.
Dr. Gari Clifford (Emory University) will discuss the use of interpretable machine learning in healthcare and its impact on bias and ethics.
Dr. Christian Lebiere (Carnegie Mellon University) will present on cognitive models at the interface of humans and machines.
Patrick Hall (bnh.ai and The George Washington University) will discuss machine learning transparency in the legal context.

The event will be livestreamed and open to a limited number of in-person participants in Washington, DC (see registration for details).
