As policymakers and community leaders have worked to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become increasingly clear that the use of data, statistics, and data science can play a critical role in protecting public health and determining the best path forward. Moving from theory to practice presents challenges for working with a patchwork of data from many different sources across public and private sectors.

Join the National Academies for a symposium on June 10, 2021 from 1:00-5:30pm ET to explore the latest statistics and data science methods and how they can be applied to real-world situations. Speakers will discuss how their work in modeling, inference, predictive analysis, and machine learning has been applied to track the spread of COVID-19, drug use, air pollution, and human trafficking. Panelists will explore the strengths and weaknesses of available surveillance data and how to integrate and draw insight from multiple imperfect data sources.

Opioid use disorder is one of the biggest public health challenges facing the United States, and local and national policy makers are striving to develop interventions to mitigate its impact. Robust data and analyses are fundamental to understanding the extent of the epidemic and to developing, evaluating, and improving policy responses. However, there are many challenges related to data collection (e.g., completeness, timeliness) and modeling for local and national policy interventions. Join the Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics on June 10, 2019 from 1-5pm ET for a half-day discussion exploring current practices, challenges, and opportunities for using data, modeling, and policy making to address the opioid epidemic.

Rapid growth in the number of devices connected through the internet of things (IoT) poses major challenges to maintaining connectivity, functionality, and security, as demonstrated by prominent cyber attacks launched through IoT devices. Traditional approaches in cyber security such as firewalls and encryption aim to prevent malicious intrusion, however additional countermeasures and approaches are necessary to detect and respond to malicious behavior and to identify when devices or data are compromised. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine invite you to attend a symposium and webcast on Statistics and Data Science for a Cyber Secure Internet of Things on June 14, 2018 in Washington, DC. During the event, speakers will discuss the role of statistical models and theory for IoT and for detecting, overcoming, and neutralizing cyber attacks.
