VIRTUAL (EDT)

Background:

The current COVID-19 pandemic is the most serious public health challenge of our time. This grave human security crisis stretches well beyond the immediate health emergency to encompass enormous impacts to people and governments working to achieve a more sustainable and resilient planet. As Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized, we need “all hands on deck to fight a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic."

Concept Note:

Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) have the potential to provide immense and indispensable tools to help us overcome this and other pressing global challenges. The proposed online side event will explore the role of STI in accelerating the UN decade of action and meeting sustainable development objectives. The first session (30 minutes) will share highlights of the recent STI Forum side event. This high-level event entitled “Sustainable Development Goals in the Era of COVID-19” co-chaired and co-sponsored by 10 Member States took place May 14-15, 2020 with UN Under-Secretary-General Fabrizio Hochschild opening the conference. The meeting continued with an exploration of existing and innovative measures to effectively respond to the disease, discussed challenges and opportunities offered by STI to advance the SDGs and looked at the future of STI cooperation in a post-COVID-19 world.

The second session (60 minutes) will explore the challenges and opportunities for global sustainability from a scientific and evidence-based perspective at this critical juncture for humanity when the world’s development trajectory within the next 10 years must decisively shift towards a path that can take humanity to a more equitable future to ensure well-being for all on a more stable and resilient planet.

The last session (30 minutes) will provide recommendations on how countries can move to recovery by leveraging STI while balancing sustainability and resilience.
