The Gulf Research Program is partnering with Louisiana Public Health Institute to facilitate this multi-day workshop that will provide attendees with opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement as they develop their proposals for the funding opportunity Improving Public Health Data Systems to Address Health Equity Challenges for At-Risk Communities in the US Gulf Coast (Cycle 2 - 2023) The workshop panel sessions and activities will focus on key topics and requirements of the funding opportunity. Panel sessions will highlight lived experiences of at-risk communities and present environmental, climate, and geospatial data sources and tools that have, are being, and can be used to complement health data.

This webinar will consider health disparities, health equity, and social determinants of health (i.e., the fundamental causes of health disparities). The panelists will take a deep dive into these fundamental causes within the historical context of the Gulf South, such as structural, institutional, or systemic factors that have manifested and maintained inequitable conditions (e.g., geographies, environmental racism) that have given rise to health disparities in at-risk communities.

This workshop brought together diverse community stakeholders (e.g., academic researchers and community-based organizations) to address flood risks in Northeast Houston, TX. The purpose was to foster an exchange of data and knowledge, focused on finding equitable solutions to mitigate the impact of flooding.

The objectives of this workshop were to:

Explore how different data sets from community sources, government agencies, and academic research can be combined to enhance the overall understanding of flooding and its effects on communities in Northeast Houston.
Identify community knowledge gaps and determine potential solutions to reduce the risk of flooding
Provide a setting for ongoing engagement and cooperation to address the issue of flooding effectively by discussing potential follow-on activities and new collaborations with researchers and community partners in Northeast Houston.

Enhancing Community Resilience (EnCoRe) staff met with community stakeholders, partners, and grantees in Harrison County and Jackson County, Mississippi.

The purpose of the trip was to introduce the Gulf Research Program (GRP) and EnCoRe Initiative to community stakeholders; learn how communities are thinking about climate change, health, and equity; ascertain how community priorities align with EnCoRe and GRP goals and programs; and identify community social capital assets and capacity-building needs.
