TRB Webinar: Planning and Assessing Ferry System Capacity

April 11, 2023

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM (EDT)

Past

Ferry transportation services have the potential to play an even greater role in many municipal and regional transportation systems. These services can boost transit capacity to transportation networks and serve as a lifeline for many geographically-isolated communities. TRB hosted a webinar on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM Eastern that provided an overview of the pre-published TCRP Report 238: Quantitative Procedures for Designing and Operating Ferry Services. The report presents guidance for scheduled and fixed-route transit services and facilities that serve passengers and vehicles. Presenters defined the capacity of a ferry system and its challenges and provide quantitative procedures for designing and operating ferry services.

This webinar was sponsored by TRB’s Transit Cooperative Research Program.

The slides are linked in the meeting materials. View the recorded webinar below.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. Ferry capacity concepts – Kelly Lesoing, KPFF Consulting Engineers

  2. Passenger throughput research and findings – Joseph Kaylor, Arup

  3. Question and answer session moderated by Kristen Kissinger, KPFF Consulting Engineers

The first 40 minutes of the webinar were for presentations and the final 20 minutes was reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants are able to:

  1. Identify how ferry system elements, including operating conditions and assets, are related and affect overall system capacity

  2. Quantify and assess passenger and vehicle movement

  3. Address capacity challenges through design of infrastructure investments, operations, and service planning
