About

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is pleased to host a two-day workshop examining the impact COVID-19 has had on the K-12 Teaching Profession. This workshop will also serve as an opportunity to revisit findings from the 2020 reports, Changing Expectations for the K-12 Teacher Workforce: Policies, Preservice Education, Professional Development, and the Workplaceand Reopening K-12 Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prioritizing Health, Equity, and Communities.

The goals of this workshop are:

Acquaint participants with the conclusions, recommendations, and research priorities from the previous NASEM reports
Share new research conducted during the pandemic, with respect to:
1. Teachers’ own experience of teaching during the pandemic
2. The impact of the pandemic on programs of preservice teacher education, induction, and professional development
3. The impact of the pandemic on school and district leaders, including their ability to support and retain teachers
4. State and local responses to the pandemic that affected the teaching profession
5. Other research with implications for teaching, learning, schooling, and the teaching profession
Provide a forum for considering how the events of the last year may alter conclusions, recommendations, and research priorities regarding teaching and the teacher workforce.
Explore the intersection of the pandemic, existing inequities, and the movement for racial justice with respect to the future of teaching, learning, schooling, and the teaching profession.
Consider the potential for “re-imagining” or “re-inventing” education.

The workshop will explore:

Teachers' experiences in the last year
The changing dynamics of the teacher workforce
The role of preservice teacher education programs in the last year
The type of support practicing teachers received during the last year
Policy and leadership responses and initiatives
Re-imagining teaching, learning, and schooling at the intersection of the pandemic, existing inequities, and the movement for racial justice
