About

In the midst of the current global pandemic, researchers are racing to find answers to the questions that remain about SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Many of these unanswered questions revolve around understanding how the virus is transmitted. For instance, can the virus be transmitted through speech and exhaled breath? How long do aerosols containing the virus linger in the air? How far can these aerosols travel? This Environmental Health Matters Initiative (EHMI) workshop delved into the rapidly evolving science on the spread of the virus, as part of a larger body of COVID-19 related work at the National Academies. We featured experts in aerosol science, virology, infectious disease, and epidemiology.

In 2022, as a follow up to this workshop, EHMI held the Indoor Air Management of Airborne Pathogens: A Virtual Workshop Series. Highlights of this work were summarized in a commentary piece authored by the workshop series co-chairs Linsey C. Marr and Jonathan M. Samet and featured in our Program News.
