Speaker: Lina C. Patino
Title: NSF and Geoheritage: funding opportunities for education, conservation, and research
Description: We will describe funding opportunities at NSF that align with Geoheritage goals of promoting scientific literacy in formal and informal settings; enhancing conservation efforts of field and collections; and promoting greater understanding of how natural processes are impacted by human activity.
Bio Sketch: Lina Patino joined the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2005 and is currently Senior Program Director in the Office of the Assistant Director for Geosciences. Prior to this position, Lina was the Division Director for Earth Sciences (EAR) at NSF (2018-2020). From 2006 to 2017, Lina managed the Education and Human Resources Program in EAR; focusing on fostering workforce development for Earth Sciences through Research Experience for Undergraduates and Postdoctoral Fellowship programs. In 2015, Lina held a detail position in the Office of International Science and Engineering where she worked with the science funding agencies from South America and the Caribbean, including Cuba, fostering scientific collaborations. Prior to coming to NSF, Lina was an associate professor at Michigan State University where she conducted research in the origin and evolution of volcanic rocks from Central America. Lina is originally from Colombia, received her B.S. (1990), M.S. (1993) and Ph.D. (1997) in Geological Sciences from Rutgers University.
Speaker: M. Brandon Jones
Bio Sketch: Brandon Jones is the Program Director for education and broadening participation efforts in the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Geosciences. At NSF, he oversees programs that focus on undergraduate and graduate workforce preparation for the Geosciences and supports initiatives related to increasing diversity and enhancing inclusion and belonging in STEM. Brandon received a BA in biology from The Lincoln University (PA) in 1991 and his MS & PhD degrees in Marine Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. He taught five years of high school science in the interim between his MS and PhD matriculation. Brandon currently serves on the board of directors for the American Geophysical Union and the Environmental Leadership Program. He is also a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment. He continues to be an active mentor for historically underrepresented students interested in STEM.
Speaker: Donna Whitney
Title: A Vision for NSF Earth Sciences 2020-2030: Earth in Time
Bio Sketch: Donna Whitney is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and Head of the N.H. Winchell School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Minnesota. She received an A.B. in geology at Smith College and a Ph.D. in geological sciences at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on the chemical and physical processes of metamorphism in the deep crust using observations from the scale of mineral grains to mountain systems. She is a fellow of the Mineralogical Society of America and the Geological Society of America, and has been an editor of the Journal of Metamorphic Geology since 2005.
Speaker: Damian Spangrud
Title: Digital Transformation of Geoheritage Sites
Description: Technology continues to transform all aspects of society. It is critical to leverage technology to enagege and expand the geoscience community’s identification of and engagement with Geoheritage sites. Moving beyond traditional tools will expend not only the audience, it will also expand the impact and common understanding of Geoheritage sites.
Bio Sketch: Damian Spangrud is the Director of Solutions at Esri (the world’s largest GIS software company). In his 25+ years at Esri, he has focused on making the Science of Where understandable and actionable. As part of Esri’s corporate management team, he often travels to speak about the importance of geographic thinking, GIS, and trends in technology and innovation. In his role as Director of Solutions, Damian manages teams that evangelize the role of GIS across industries and build industry focused apps, making it easier to use GIS across organizations while driving innovation. Damian has an MSc in Earth Science and a BS in Geography and a passion for maps and spatial analysis. Damian tweets about all things spatial (especially maps) @spangrud.
