Description
Building on workshops held in 2020 and 2021 on Educational Pathways and Financial Barriers for Black students, a planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will organize a virtual public workshop to highlight promising financial and supportive services and programs throughout various stages of career development for Black students in Science, Engineering, and Medicine (SEM). Following student progression through the major stages of education and career development, the workshop sessions will identify policies and practices that aim to mitigate and alleviate long-standing barriers to the full participation of Black students in SEM at the K-12, undergraduate, and graduate and professional levels.
The workshop will also examine recent shifts in SEM employment trends; the roles of SEM professional societies in setting and obtaining diverse, equitable, and inclusive cultural goals; and how diverse funding streams might help address remaining needs. Specific attention will be given to the educational context, such as the experiences of Black students at Predominately White Institutions and how Historically Black Colleges and Universities contribute to SEM ecosystem.
Following the workshop, a rapporteur-authored workshop proceedings will be published.
