Options for Reducing Lead Emissions from Piston-Engine Aircraft
Requested by Congress in P.L. 115-254, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018, this new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, acknowledges that while efforts are underway to develop an unleaded aviation fuel that can be used by the entire gasoline-powered fleet, the uncertainty of success means that other steps should also be taken to begin reducing lead emissions and exposures. This report recommends options for mitigating and reducing lead from aviation, including options for changing fuels, aircraft operations, and practices at airports.
This briefing was for members of Congress and congressional staff only. The report was publicly released on January 6, 2021 and can be found, in its entirety, on the Web site of the National Academies Press.
