The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a workshop under the Board on Army Research and Development to explore quantum sensing technologies and their potential to improve the U.S. Army's targeting capabilities to counter unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). The workshop will bring together experts from across government, industry, and academia for a 3-day meeting to discuss the state of quantum sensing technologies and explore the time horizon for application to the counter-UAS mission.
Description
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a workshop under the Board on Army Research and Development to explore quantum sensing technologies and their potential to improve the U.S. Army's targeting capabilities to counter unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). Specifically, the workshop will:
1. Review the overall state of current quantum sensing hardware and software solutions for U.S. Army C-UAS missions and assess their potential for application. This will address at least the following aspects:
a. Software, artificial intelligence, and algorithms that enable and enhance the application of quantum sensors to the C-UAS mission.
b. Applicable quantum sensor technologies such as (but not limited to): magnetometers, gravimeters, RF sensors, radar, and enhanced imaging for C-UAS targeting applications.
2. For each technology, explore the time horizon for R&D investment, acquisition, and potential for transition to the warfighter. Include a review of which emerging technologies may have dual-use applications, thereby allowing the sponsor to focus on those that only the Army can, or must, do.
