Explore Our Decadal Surveys

Update

First published in 1964, our decadal surveys have a long history of providing guidance for decision-makers and research communities, from identifying top priority mission destinations to presenting strategies for maximizing scientific gains across various budget scenarios. From new space telescopes to future planetary exploration, our decadal surveys have inspired groundbreaking science across astronomy and astrophysics, heliophysics/solar and space physics, planetary science and astrobiology, biological and physical sciences in space, and Earth science and applications from space.

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope rises to space atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026. The milestone begins the observatory’s journey to explore the large‑scale structure of the universe. Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter, conduct a statistical census of planetary systems, and enable a broad range of additional astrophysics research. Liftoff occurred at 7:26 a.m. EDT, from Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A.

New Interactive:  A Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars

Update

When astronauts set foot on Mars, it will mark a new era of discovery shaped by decades of research, engineering, and imagination. A new interactive overview of our report A Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars offers a high-level outline of options for future human-led campaigns and how these missions can advance the highest-priority science objectives, from searching for signs of life to understanding how planets evolve and preparing for sustained human exploration.

Our Expertise

The Aeronautics, Space, and Astronomy program area brings together leading experts from academia, government, and industry to provide independent, strategic, and forward-thinking advice on critical space science and aeronautics challenges.

Our decadal surveys inform federal research agendas and agency investments, guiding mission planning and funding decisions that span multiple administrations, while our studies and rapid assessments ensure that decision makers have access to timely and actionable advice. Our workshops and roundtables address emerging issues by offering an unparalleled forum for strategic planning among policymakers, scientists, and industry leaders.

From evaluating workforce and infrastructure needs to support a robust national space enterprise and aviation industry to identifying science strategies for human Mars exploration, our work aims to ensure that U.S. investments yield maximum scientific and societal benefits.

Statement of Task

Our work applies engineering expertise to aerospace challenges and serves as an authoritative forum for space science, policy guidance, and international research coordination. Covers aeronautics R&D, aviation safety, human spaceflight, earth science from space, astrobiology, microgravity research, heliophysics, and astronomy and astrophysics, fostering collaboration among researchers, government, and the public.
