US Navy submariners and divers face numerous health risks, including oxygen toxicity, inert gas uptake, neurological syndromes, noise exposure, thermal changes, and decompression sickness - among others. To protect personnel, the 2002 Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society report, commissioned by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), established priorities for Naval undersea medicine. Significant technological advancements have occurred since then, and ongoing undersea occupational hazards are being identified. The upcoming workshop will enable experts, including ONR and Naval Sea Systems Command, to revisit this report, discuss unresolved priorities, and consider how emerging innovation could advance Naval undersea biomedical research.
